Happy thanksgiving to all of you lucky souls who get to celebrate that lovely holiday! It’s black Friday, we are in between Thanksgiving and Christmas and here I am with a totally non-winter-y shake. But I loved it so much I had to share it.
I’ve always been quite sceptical about protein powders, but I love the idea of a protein shake. This little problem was solved quite recently when amazing brand Creative Nature send me some hemp seeds. Seriously those little gems are amazing (and for those who were wondering; yep, they do come from the same plant as marijuana, but have nothing to do with said).
Creative Nature Hemp Seeds are almost one-third protein and very high in omega 3 fatty acids, which helps lowering blood pressure and decrease risk of blood clots (source). The seeds don’t have much of a taste which means you can add them to anything without tasting it (like this smoothie). I do love the slight taste they have though and therefore love sprinkling them on my morning porridge or salad.
To this shake I also added some Creative Nature Cacao Nibs, because banana and chocolate will always be one of the best combos ever. Good thing cacao nibs are full of good stuff, for instance antioxidants en masse such as flavonoids. Raw cacao also contains tryhthophan – a fatty acid which helps on the levels of serotonin in the brain (source). How abundant serotonins in the bran has been linked to how happy you feel – it os for instance this compound you lack, if you have a depression. So yes, chocolate makes you happy.
The rest of the ingredients are wonderful stuff such as banana for some healthy carbs and avocado for some fatty acids. And almond milk to bring it all together. Including both protein, carbs and fats this shake is great as a meal in itself – or as a super delicious, healthy and filling snack.
A super delicious, creamy and filling chocolate shake that is bursting with nutrients from shelled hemp seeds, cacao nibs and avocado. Including both healthy carbs, fats and protein this smoothie works great as a meal or breakfast.

I’m back home from the most amazing trip to Barcelona with my classmates. It is actually kind of sad being back. I miss it. Such trips just gets you closer to your classmates. I’ve been to Barcelona two times before, but a third time surely wasn’t too much. It is such a wonderful city. It has everything – a habour, beaches, shopping areas, good restaurants… And I love that fact that it isn’t very big – you can pretty much walk around (almost).
It is wonderful traveling with friends, but it has one small downside: you don’t really get to eat exactly what you want. I had good food though – my friends have a great taste for food (can you even say that?). But I didn’t dare asking if we could go finding something vegetarian or raw or something like that. Haha. I did find one deli with vegan food though, but unfortunately we had just eaten dinner. What a shame!
One food-related thing which I bring back from the trip is the desire to make paella. Oh god that stuff is good. Definitely making it soon!
It is so tuff being home again. I have the busiest week on a very very long time. The only two hours I have at home (literally) are these two Wednesday night. Which I had to spend blogging.
I’m having driving lessons every day this week, two times I’m going to The Academy for Talented Youth, in school we are participating in a biotech competition which takes up a lot of my spare time too and Friday afternoon there are a big social event for the entire school, for which I am one of the organisers.
Oh yeah – I almost forgot: Ordinary school and homework on top of all the other things.
So I’m so sorry I haven’t been commenting on your lovely blogs the last couple of weeks. It is so sad and I really miss it. There is nothing more wonderful than reading them!
Just before I went to Barcelona dear Dearna over at To Her Core (amazing blog btw – go read it!) gave me the great idea of adding chickpeas to smoothies. So I did. It turned out great. A quick, filling & creamy smoothie, which is high in protein. Perfect for busy weeks where you just need something fast.
A good indication of how busy I am is the amount of music with lyrics I get to listen to. I am a music addict. Seriously. I just don’t work well without my daily “sound-dose” of Passenger, Angus & Julia Stone, Stu Larsen or Jack Johnson. The music is on non-stop when I’m home. Without lyrics when I’m doing homework (Nils Frahm is amazing guys) and with lyrics when I have actual free time. So if I haven’t been listening to music with lyrics for while it is either because A) I haven’t been at home or B) whenever I’m home I’m doing homework.
I have not listened to music for a week by now. Not at all. Not even just 10 minutes. Aka. I’ve been pretty busy. Hence the lack of posts and cooking.
I’m sorry. This post wasn’t meant to be all about busyness. I just wanted to tell that I’ve missed writing and cooking (well, I actually got to cook dinner last Sunday) so much. So I was very happy when the first block this morning was cancelled. Time for making a special breakfast (not that I don’t like my usual greek yoghurt with granola).
Did you know it is pancake day today? I didn’t. That is such a shame. How could I miss this important day. I actually even considered making healthy pancakes this morning, but decided a smoothie bowl would be better.
Which was a great idea. It turned out so good. I’m just sad I didn’t make pancakes too ;)
Green Smoothie Bowl
Place everything (except the granola) in a blender or powerful food processor and pulse until there are no lumps left. Serve immediately topped with granola.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
This summer-y smoothie is a little out of space in a world of apples, cinnamon, turkeys, spices and hot cocoa. Nevertheless it is super delicious and refreshing in this cold and grey winter world.
I’ve been wanting to share a smoothie recipe for a very long time. This is The Smoothie Lover after all. I really love smoothies. I like the fact that they are healthy and full of vitamins and still tastes so good! Yum. Especially the vitamins are good in the winter when we don’t get as many of them as we do in the summer time.
Thise lovely smoothie consists of nothing but banana, kale and blackcurrant. And no, you cannot taste the kale at all. It just makes the smoothie even healthier. Drink your greens!
The blackcurrant berries I used in this smoothie are from our very own garden. Remember this lovely shot from this summer? From the post about berries. I wish there still were tons of berries in our garden. But I still love the wintertime!
I often wonder why I decided to call my blog “The Smoothie Lover”. I mean, I really do love smoothies. They are the best! But take a look at my blog. I haven’t really got that many recipes on smoothies. I often make a smoothie when I come home from school or before ballet and I really don’t know why I never put the recipe on the blog. Silly me :) But well, my blog can be called The Smoothie Lover even though there aren’t many recipes on smoothies can’t it? I still loooooove smoothies. So that’s my conclusion; I love smoothies and therefore my blog can have the name it has :D Haha
But anyways… Yesterday I decided to make a smoothie AND take photos of it. What I really like about smoothies is that you can make it in so many different ways. I like to experiment and mix all kinds of food, vegetables and even sometimes herbs (but for God’s sake use fresh). Of course those experiments often end up very badly (which is why I made two smoothies yesterday before finally ending up with a smoothie which you could actually eat) but often they turn out just great! As this one.
I’m currently making a big history assignment so I’m not in school. I have a great love/ hate relationship with such assignments. At one point I love them because you have to work independent without someone telling you what to do. On the other hand I hate them. Writing about the same subject a week in a row really can be exhausting and boring. But yet I’m not that bored. I just want to be done as soon as possible. Which is why I’ll end this post here (well technically I’ll end the post after the recipe ;) ) and go back to writing.
Have a nice day everyone!
