Healthy Nutella – Gourmet Chocolate Spread with Roasted Hazelnuts
Sund Nutella – gourmet chokoladepålæg med ristede hasselnødder
I love Nutella. Except that I don’t.
Super confusing. The thing is I think whoever got the idea of combining hazelnuts and chocolate was a genius. A prodigy. The Einstein of Food. Those two flavours complete each other like strawberries & chocolate, balsamic & tomatoes, caramel & sea salt and goat cheese & honey.
So when people talk about Nutella truffles, Nutella muffins and Nutella grilled toast I am all like “ooh, YES PLEASE let’s make that RIGHT NOW!” But then I remember – I don’t like Nutella. At least not Nutella-Nutella.
…
“Why?” I ask myself. It’s simply too sweet. I know I sound like a health fanatic, but that’s the truth. The sugar taste overrule the hazelnut and most importantly the chocolate flavour. So I always make mine myself. It’s easy, even more delicious, and you can eat it by the spoon.
…
Healthy Nutella - Gourmet Chocolate Spread with Roasted Hazelnuts
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup (120g. / 180mL) hazelnuts
- 1/4 cup (60mL) almonds
- 2 tbsp. light sesame oil (or other taste neutral oil*)
- 2 tbsp. cocoa powder
- 1 medjool date (or two small very soft dates)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 200°C / 390ªF
- Place the hazelnuts and almonds on a baking sheet with baking paper and roast them in the oven for approx. 5 minutes or until they start to smell nice.
- Rub off the skin from the hazelnuts (I recommend doing this between two paper towels.
- Place the nuts in a food processor and blend until hey turn into butter. If you – like me – have a weak food processor this can take up to ten minutes.
- Once smooth add in the remaining ingredients and pulse to combine.
- Store in a mason jar in the fridge.
Notes
* It is important you use light sesame oil here, since dark has a very distinctive sesame flavour. Use oils such as sunflower seed oil, peanut oil or melted coconut oil. Or olive oil if you like the taste of olive oil and chocolate, which can indeed be an excellent combination.
This looks amazing! I agree with you on the nutella being to sickly sweet, so I’ll definitely be sure to try this out, thanks for sharing : )

Thank you so much Katryhn!
Yay! Happy to have a fellow not-Nutella-liker. I hope you’ll like it
Your pictures always make me want to step into this world of delicious food and airy backgrounds with the perfect lighting. This sounds weird, but I’m not much of a fan of storebought Nutella, but I’ve liked it homemade! Your nutella looks so thick and amazing AND it has almonds? You really can’t go wrong with adding almonds now can you? :-)
Oh wow, thanks a million Katherine! And I am happy to know one more person who doesn’t like Nutella :D
Haha nope – almonds make everything better! Period
I love love love the look of this spread! Chocolate and hazelnuts together are the best. I love Nutella but it makes me feel so guilty eating it haha, this healthy version would be a much better idea :)
Thank you Hannah – hazelnuts and chocolate is a combination made in heaven
Mmmm this spread looks and sounds so delicious! I love that it’s a healthy alternative, using a date to sweeten it is such a great idea! I definitely have to try this!
Thank you Harriett! Yes please do – I love date sweetened things :)
I’m not a big fan of the original nutella because it’s too sweet, therefore I prefer the healthier versions of nutella. I’ve made a similar version of this before and it was amazing. This one looks pretty delicious too :)
Yay how nice to know one more who doesn’t like that stuff :) Thank you Thea!
Love Nutella!!! However, I too think it’s too sweet (but I’m too lazy to make it myself). I think it’s time I do so! Oh and crepes with this nutella and whipped cream would be amazing…
Haha, I know that feeling way too well ;) Well, it actually isn’t that hard or time consuming – I think it took me 15 minutes from start to finish
A great present for my best friend, she goes through a nutella glass every week.
Oh how wonderful if this could be a present for your friend – I hadn’t thought of it as a gift idea, but it’s actually a wonderful idea. Thanks!
LOVE Nutella! But healthy Nutella is even better! Looks delicious, Josefine! :D
Thank you so much Jess!
This sounds absolutely super delicious! I will definitely NOT make this recipe, I would eat the whole thing in 2 seconds…but actually looks too good to make such statements, so we will see ;)
BTW about Nutella, you just wrote exactly what I feel too. Like anything nutella-y sounds amazing, but then I try it and it’s too sweet! And no, it’s not just a health fanatic thing, I said the same way before I cared about healthy things…but homemade ones, YES! The ones I get totally excited about ;)
Haha, I eat it by the spoon, so I don’t think it was a good idea for me to make it either ;)
I am so glad to know you feel the same way. Because people tend to think I am crazy when I say I don’t like Nutella.
your pictures are amazing :)

Thank you sweet Anna – your’s too :D
How good is chocolate with hazelnuts? I have been making a whole bunch of healthy creations with these ingredients lately but yet to try homemade nutella – I need to give this a go!
The best!
Yeah I love all of your recipes with that flavour combination – it is just the best!
